This group developed a compression standard for compressing images which are widely used and supported on all modern day web browsers. JPG made it much easier and faster to transfer image files over a network, and the images consumed less space on devices. News and magazines reporters could with JPG send their photographic images much faster to the publishers. Two other compression standards in use for compressing images are GIF and PNG.
